CUPRA joins Formula E with ABT expanding commitment to eMotorsport
After its successes in the FIA ETCR and Extreme E, CUPRA proves once again that electrification and performance are a perfect match by heading for the top series: the drivers of the ABT CUPRA Formula E Team will be Robin Frijns and Nico Müller.
Over the past four years, CUPRA has reinvented motorsport and achieved several successes. The Spanish carmaker has developed the e-Racer, the world's first 100% electric racing touring car, and achieved outstanding results in competitions such as FIA ETCR and Extreme E.
CUPRA has racing in its DNA, promotes sustainability in racing as well, and aims to become a fully electrified brand by 2030. The partnership with ABT to compete in Formula E - the world's most important all-electric competition - in 2023 fits into this scenario. This partnership was a natural step for CUPRA, which is committed to the transformation of the racing world and intends to prove that electrification and performance are a perfect match.
Same DNA
Formula E - the only certified zero-emission sport since its inception - and CUPRA share the same DNA, as they reach an audience that shares the same attitude: a group of technology and innovation enthusiasts, merging the physical and digital worlds. Both CUPRA and Formula E are present in the metaverse with an official blockchain racing game.
"Racing is at the core of CUPRA’s DNA and at CUPRA we go out to win. It’s the right time to take the next leap forward and join the world’s greatest electric motorsport competition. I can't wait to see the ABT CUPRA Formula E team competing in the heart of some of the world's most iconic cities. Joining the Formula E, a unique motorsport platform, underlines our ambition of becoming a truly global relevant brand, with the aim of inspiring the world from Barcelona", said Wayne Griffiths, CEO of CUPRA.
CUPRA and ABT
The official drivers of the ABT CUPRA Formula E team for the 2023 season will be Robin Frijns (Netherlands) and Nico Müller (Switzerland). ABT and CUPRA, already together for the Extreme E championship, will strengthen their collaboration as the team's main partner, while Mahindra Racing will supply the powertrain technology. Participation in the premier class of electric racing will have a huge impact on the brand thanks to the technological innovation capabilities and global visibility it offers.
ABT has already achieved great success in Formula E, while CUPRA began its journey into electric motorsport by developing the e-Racer. The partnership between CUPRA and ABT is proof of both companies' vision of reinventing the world of motorsport through electrification.
ETCR and Extreme E
With the e-Racer CUPRA participated in the FIA ETCR World Championship, the first championship dedicated to 100% electric touring cars, bringing home the double world Constructors' and Drivers' titles in both 2021 and 2022. In 2022, CUPRA EKS team’s drivers also completed the season by taking all three top positions in the final standings. The CUPRA e-Racer was, for the second year in a row, the fastest and most reliable car in the competition.
Participation in Extreme E, the off-road series dedicated to all-electric SUVs that turns the spotlight on natural environments threatened by climate change, ties in with the transformation CUPRA is operating on its range, aiming to make it fully electrified by 2030. In 2018, CUPRA's ambition was to reinvent racing. Thanks to a few believers with big dreams, the Spanish brand has pioneered new formats of this sport, creating new emotions and experiences.
