From hardware to software: the first mobility platform by SEAT:CODE
The SEAT:CODE software development centre has created a digital platform as a service for managing multimodal mobility. Used initially for the SEAT MÓ motosharing service, the platform is now also available to other businesses interested in using it.
SEAT has taken another step in its transformation from vehicle manufacturer to mobility services provider, creating its first multimodal mobility platform thanks to the work of the SEAT:CODE software development centre. Operating and managing vehicle fleets 100% digitally, this is the first software product marketed by SEAT.
SEAT MÓ was the first operator to use this new mobility platform, for its motosharing service, launched in the city of Barcelona last August with more than 600 eScooters. As it is compatible with any type of public or private shared service – be it cars, motorbikes, bicycles or kickscooters – the platform is now also available to other businesses and operators.
A state-of-the-art platform for sharing services

“This platform shows that we are no longer just a vehicle manufacturer, but also a mobility services provider. SEAT is now able to sell software and that’s a great added value for the company,” commented a satisfied Carsten Isensee, SEAT Vice-president for Finance and IT.
The platform offers a user app – available for iOS as well as Android – and an advanced geolocation system that enables real-time monitoring of all vehicles connected to it, on-the-spot editing of vehicle parking zones, and management of user payments, as well as a range of other functions. It also provides operators with an interface that allows them to create and edit dashboards, monitor data in real time, analyse user behaviour or make forecasts, thanks to IoT technology.
Solutions to share with others

“We offer B2B solutions for SEAT and its brands, for the Volkswagen Group, and now we’re also making our technological expertise available to other companies, thus reducing the barriers to entry for any type of shared mobility operator, such as delivery companies, fleets, or public entities,” added SEAT CIO Sebastian Grams.
The SEAT IT strategy and the SEAT:CODE software development centre were recently recognized for the best innovation and transformation project of 2020 by CIONET, the leading business community of CIOs and digital leaders; Sebastian Grams was also awarded the title of CIO of the year in Spain. Both awards are the result of the work of a team with a cutting-edge attitude, enabling it to create innovative projects.
Software developed in the heart of Barcelona
SEAT’s new digital machine is located in the heart of Barcelona, on the Rambla, and is driving the company’s digital transformation from hardware to software. The development of the new mobility platform was carried out entirely by the SEAT:CODE team in a record time of eight months.
Since its creation a little over a year ago, SEAT:CODE has progressively expanded its team of software development professionals. 150 employees are currently dedicated to creating digital applications and solutions to boost SEAT and CUPRA, as well as defining digital solutions for the whole Volkswagen Group and, from now on, for other businesses as well.
